Access To Information (ATIP)

The ATIP System

While most services at VAC are frustrating and time consuming, the ATIP Office (Opens a New Window) is fairly good and timely at responding and providing information to Veterans.

When trying to get information about your file, for yourself or your representative, the is the best way to get records out of VAC.

There are two ways to get information:

An Informal ATIP request, and a Formal Request.

It should be noted that all formal requests have a fee associated with them.  Currently, the charge is $5.00 regardless of the method:  online of paper requests.

Informal Requests

Depending on what you are requesting, and how easy it is for them to get the information, your very first step is to submit an Informal ATIP Request.  It states on their website:

"An Informal request can be submitted in the form of a signed letter stating clearly what information is being requested. There are no fees and no legislated deadlines associated with informal requests. There is also no recourse for a requester in the event they wish to lodge a complaint. Certain informal requests may be handled at the point of origin."

It appears that in most cases, the VAC ATIP office will accept an email in lieu of a signed letter.  They of course will tell you if they need it.  Optionally, send a copy of a signed letter attached to your email.

Essentially it is up to VAC ATIP if they accept it.  You can send your email to vac.atip-aiprp.acc@vac-acc.gc.ca
